Bas goes to Mount Carmel School

Bas started first grade at Mount Carmel School in Agat, it is a school in the south. He has been going for a month an a half and he does great. It is a very special school. Their main focus is music and performing (dance). They have a music studio at school and are working in a dance studio as well. From first grade on they get lots of music, but it middle school they really get a LOT of music. In first grade they will start playing the ukulele, but as they move on they can pick their own instrument. They have a school band and they sometimes practice at lunch in the cafeteria, where they have a beautiful stage. Once a week they get to see the band, it is so much fun! Very funny Bas wants to be a rock star now. He draws them all the time.

Another focus is the Chamorro language. Every day they have an hour of Chamorro. It is so funny when he comes home; he tells me things in Chamorro, which I don’t understand. He sings in Chamorro, prays in Chamorro and tells me Chamorro legends.

His teacher is called ms Aguon, she is very nice, I like her a lot. I tell a story in her class once in a while that is biology related. The class has 20 students and they have another 1^st grade class (Ska is going start in that class tomorrow, they had still more space).

The school is old but has so much character. Tom has to laugh because I told I love the wooden blinds they have in the classroom. The tree in the playground gives it a spirit.

There probably is a lot more I want to say about the school, but this is as far as I get now.

Bas gaat naar school in Mount Carmel School in Agat, een dorp in het zuiden, maar aan de andere kant. Hij gaat nu al een maand en een half en doet het heel goed. Hij is een heel bijzondere school. Ze focussen vooral op muziek en optreden (dans en muziek). Ze hebben een ziek studie en ze werken momenteel aan een dans studio. Vanaf het eerste studiejaar krijgen ze veel muziek en leren ze op de ukulele spleen maar naarmate ze naar een hoger leerjaar gaan mogen zee en eigen instrument kiezen. Ze hebben een school band en soms oefenen ze in de refer, waar zee en groot, prachtig podium hebben. Eens per week zien ze groep echt spelen en dat vind Bas geweldig. Hij wil nu een rock ster worden. Hij tekent e rook de hele tijd over.

Ze focussen ook op de locale taal, het Chamorro. Elke dag krijgen zee en uur Chamorro. Het is bijzonder grappig om Bas bezig te horen. Hij zegt me dingen die ik niet begrijp. Hij zingt in het Chamorro, bidt in het Chamorro en vertelt me legends.

Bas zijn lerares noemt mevrouw Aguon, het is een toffe, jonge lerares. Ik vertel in haar klas af en toe een verhaal voor de kinderen (geralateerd met de les biologie). De klas heft 20 studenten en er zijn 2 klassen (Ska begint morgen in de andere klas, daar was nog plaats).

De school is oud maar heft heel veel karakter. Tom moest lichen omdat ik hem vertelde dat ik de houten blinden in de klas mooi vond. De boom in de speeltuin geeft het leven.

Er is waarschijnlijk nog veel meer dat ik over de school wil vertellen, maar dat zal ik gaandeweg doen.
